Labor Day

I feel like if it's given the name "Labor Day" then I think people should be working; not the opposite.  Anyway, I'm not complaining that I had the day off from both classes and soccer.  Got to sleep in til 12 and relax for the day.  A group of us future engineers ventured over to the Basilica and worked on an engineering problem for a few hours estimating the height and weight of the church.  It was nice to get outside to enjoy the day.  I was going to go to the Nationals baseball game but the forecast was calling for rain all day so I didn't want to risk the money and time to get all the way over there to get cancelled.

Tomorrow my Chem lab is cancelled so I have no classes tomorrow either!  I do have some homework to do and practice at 6 so I won't be bored for the whole day.  Nothing else very exciting to report.  Looking forward to a good week ahead.

Season Opener

I already knew before yesterday that I probably wouldn't have time to blog.  So, today's blog will make up for it.  Our first season home-opener was Saturday vs. Dickinson.  The game was at 12 and we met in the locker room at 10:30.  I actually got to say a brief hello to the fam before the game and they all wished me luck.

In the locker room, we watched some European soccer and then coach gave a pregame speech.  Everyone was riled up and we headed up to the game field at 11.  We walked across the field listening to "Hells Bells" and it was pretty awesome.  Everyone was pumped.

We scored off a corner about midway into the half and went up 1 - 0.  I got called to warm up with about 20 minutes to go and entered the game with like 16 minutes left in the half and played the rest of the half.  I was pleased with my play.  Made a good run through the defense but missed the shot.  In the first five minutes of the second half, Dickinson scored to tie it up.  We rallied and eventually scored to go up again.  I got in the game with about 25 minutes left in the half and played well again.  I stole the ball and made a good run with a diagonal pass through the defense but we couldn't get the shot off.  They then tied up the game with a ball through the defense and a chip over our keeper.  I was taken out of the game with about nine minutes left.  The regulation time ended with a tie so we went to overtime. Two ten minute periods with golden goal.  We had a great run down the right side and a shot that hit the post.  I thought that was going to be the game but they countered off of that and scored in like 30 seconds from that.  Also, the guy that made the run was at least five yards offsides.  We were stunned.  Everyone thought he was off but the refs didn't agree.  We all thought we were better and we probably should've won.  A disappointing ending to our season opener.

On a personal note, I'm just glad I got some solid playing time and did well with it.  There were so many guys that didn't even get to get in the game.  I'm glad the fam got to see me play some.  Also I want to thank all my friends that came out to watch.  They made an awesome sign and cheered really loud for me.  It makes playing so much more fun when there are fans watching.  We had a team tailgate after the game on the practice field and it was nice to spend time with the fam there as well.  All the other parents were really nice and introduced themselves to us and welcomed us to the team.  It was a nice gesture.

We then headed back to the dorm and I got my second load of stuff that mom picked up for me.  A nice lounge chair for the room and more snacks will always make me happy.  Then they all piled back into the van and headed back to CNU to watch Michael's game vs. Dickinson which is today at 1.  I went to church at 5:15 pm in the Basilica and almost fell asleep to the priest's homily.  It was brutal.  There were a couple of other "nodders" that I spotted as well.  I got dinner after that and then just chilled with some friends on campus.  I was going to go out to the city but I was too tired and didn't really want to spend any money.  It was a fun night anyway.  Then this morning I got to sleep in til around 12.  I don't really have anything else to do today besides some homework so it'll be nice to relax a bit.  I don't have classes Monday or Tuesday and we have practice off today and Monday.  Not sure what I'm going to do with myself yet!  I have to find something.

Anyway it was a good Saturday and I couldn't be much happier.

Pregame

Friday.  First official week of school and classes done with.  I survived.  I had two papers due today and turned em in and am hoping for the best.  Calculus was also a little rough today. Started learning new things.  Yeah I thought that was weird too.  But I'm definitely going to have to do a lot of work on my own to stay on top of that class.

We had practice at 5 today and it was basically an hour of easy pregame set pieces and some shooting.  I was placed in the second line up today so I'm hoping to get some time tomorrow.  I can't be more excited to start the season.  Following practice we had a team dinner of pasta and salad and bread.  A great pregame meal and some quality team bonding.  Awards were given out for Champion Club members and you had to reach Champion Club level on both the mile and beep test.  I was one second off on the mile....  That's it.  Oh well, there's always next year to work for it.

The first football game was tonight as well.  I stopped by but it reminded me exactly of our high school games.  I needed to rest anyway so I left and just chilled with some friends instead.  That's about it for today.  Tomorrow should be exciting and I might not even have time to write about it.  We will see.  I'm excited to get to see all of the fam tomorrow for the game as well.

First regular season collegiate soccer game tomorrow!

Official Start to the School Year

I had basically this whole blog post typed up and then I hit close on the internet screen.. The whole thing was erased.  Now I have to do the whole thing all over again... #firstworldproblems

So today classes were cancelled between 12 and 3 due to the Mass of the Holy Spirit in the Basilica of the National Shrine.  I got to wake up late and write a paper and then head to Mass.  It also signified the start of the school year at CUA.  Cardinal Wuerl the Archbishop of Washington presided and it was pretty neat.  I forgot how big that church was and the organ resonated through the whole thing.  Pretty neat.

I had my first Engineering 102 class today at 3.30.  The professor started off saying the class should be a lot of fun and everyone should be getting A's... I'm a fan!  It's basically an introductory class for engineering that explores all disciplines and will help everyone decide exactly what major they want to go into.  I look forward to having that class this semester.

Practice started at 6 again today.  We did alot of shooting and attacking stuff which we do need to work on.  We need to start scoring more goals.  I played solid today and I think I am in the running for the second man at left mid.  I really hope to secure that spot.

On the way home from practice I got to catch up with Nelson which was nice.  He had his first ICS season game and they won while he scored two of their goals.  Not bad! He is captain and it will be interesting to see how the team of rag-tag soccer players can come together to be successful.  I wish him luck in the season.

Tomorrow I have three classes (two of which I dread) but I'm just looking forward to Saturday to get to see the fam for our season opener and then a four day weekend!  One more day...

10/4 over and out,

Hump Day

I keep losing track of my days and just trying to finish one day at a time.  I rolled out of bed to get to class at 9.  I really thought I'd be able to take all the classes I enjoy in college but I guess not.  I am required to take a Philosophy and English every Mon, Wed, and Fri from 9 to 11.  Those are my least favorite subjects.  I hate reading and writing and those are basically the only things we do in those classes.  On the other hand, I could take Calculus all day.  I actually enjoy that class and even knocked out my homework that's due in a week today.  I just want to get into the subjects that I will need for my major and not these crappy Gen Ed requirements.  Enough of ranting.

It's still so nice that I got done with classes by 1 pm.  I had time to eat lunch, do my math homework, write an essay, and even just relax all before practice at 6.  Then after practice I just eat dinner and chilled with some friends.  I'm still trying to get a solid routine down, and that's sometimes the hardest part of starting a new year.  Although it may not seem like I'm organized, I like to have a place for everything even if its all over the place.  I just have to figure out the routine.

Tomorrow my classes are cancelled between 12 and 3 due to a school Mass in the Basilica of the National Shrine next door so my first class starts at 3.30 tomorrow.  Not too shabby.  I just still need to get up and get some work done before church.  Two essays already due Friday.  This writing thing sucks!

Practice wasn't as good today as yesterday.  Coach said I need to be more consistent but it's just hard to have my best day every day of the week.  I don't really have much more to say about my personal practice today.  Just kind of disappointed but going to keep looking forward and ahead to tomorrow.  It's still just tough adjusting to everything.

After a relatively light practice, we went inside to watch some film from the Hampden Sydney game.  There were only a few clips of things we need to work on but it was still something I haven't done before.  Later coach passed out a personal "Goals" worksheet and had us fill it out for homework.  I didn't think I would be getting homework in soccer as well.  It was easy stuff and coach is just trying to get us all ready for our home opener Saturday.  Should be a good game.

Until tomorrow,

All-around a Good Day

Even though my class didn't start until 12.30 today, I still got up at nine.  I feel like its just wasteful to sleep too long into the day.  I completed an assignment and leisurely went for an early lunch.  My one class today was a Chem Lab and it was supposed to run for four hours.  Today we only went over safety in the lab and were released after one hour.  ONE HOUR OF CLASS FOR THE WHOLE DAY!  Haha I could get used to that.  I spent the rest of the day hanging out and tried to do some calculus until practice.

I also found the online code thing that I needed and lost from my Calculus book.  Thank goodness I have nice people looking out for me.  Someone picked it up after I left it and returned it to me today.  It saved me so much stress and like one hundred dollars.  That was quite the relief.

Then for practice today we played 11 v 11 for about 70 minutes.  I started on the second team at right back which was a change but I played well and no one really got past me.  Then I was placed on the starting team for the second 35 minutes at right mid.  I actually played very well there.  I intercepted a ball and made a sick run through the defense played it off and kept my run up and was played back and had a one-touch finish.  It was a nice goal, not gonna lie.  After practice I got a few more compliments from upper classman and even freshman saying I had a killer practice today.  I keep saying it, but I'm just trying to get that playing time.

That wraps it up for today.  I stopped by 711 to get some milk and it was nice to catch up with mom and dad on the phone on my way back to the dorm.  Seems like everything is doing well at home.  I'm already making my list of stuff for them to bring up to me on Saturday when they come up for the game.  Tryna get that futon game going in my room!  Could be epic.

Looking forward to more good days to come.

First Day of Classes

Monday morning 9am class rolled around a lot faster than I was hoping for.  Even though I've been getting up a lot earlier than that, I just did not really want to start classes.  I started with Philosophy followed by English until 11.  It's always hard to tell how difficult the class will be the first day, but the main things I picked up on are that there will be a lot of writing and a lot of reading as well.  Professors seem alright tho.  It is weird having a break after two hours and then having to go back to more class.  My Calc III class was at 12 and the professor already starting teaching from the book.  We will be moving fast, but I feel prepared for it from last year.  I already lost the online access code that I need and that has been bothering me.  I really don't know where I put it, but I'm hoping someone picked it up after class and will return it.  If not, then its another big expense...  College is way too expensive.

Practice was good today though.  It started at 6 and I was pretty tired before it but I played solid.  I scored a goal in a small sided game and coach stopped a certain drill to show the team how I was doing it.  I hope my constant hard work will pay off for Saturday.  I've already heard that a good amount of people say they will come to our game which could be really fun if we have fans.  I also realized how much soccer is a stress reliever for me.  I wasn't really stressed but I just had so much on my mind and trying to figure out my schedule and everything but once I step on the field, I forget all about that stuff and it's a great feeling.  I came back and was much more relaxed this evening.

Overall the first day of classes was alright and now I get to sleep in tomorrow too.  My only class starts at 12.30 but it goes until 4.30.  It's gonna be a long four hours.

Here's to learning new things!
